I'm not keen on the heroine starting to see her sisters ex boyfriend troupe.
The author writes it well for a few reasons, first of all the Hero and the sister were much younger so the romance was not as serious.
Also she was drinking and he was invested in sport and sorting his career etc out so his girlfriend was not high priority to him.
The sister describes him as never being emotionally invested in his relationships. I think this helped as he was with the sister but not in love with her.
I think the story would have worked if he hadn't been in a relationship previously with the heroine's sister, she was so manipulative and clever with emotional blackmail it would have been fine as just that without the 'ew' factor.
