This book is kinda like the worst cake you've ever eaten but it ahs really good frosting but in order to eat the frosting you have to eat a little bit of the cake too. I make the mistake of trusting Amazon and Goodreads reviews and believing this book is worthwhile and not checking tried and true ole reliable storygraph and realizing it's kinda shit. I don't think this is a bad book to read, but I really wish I didn't buy it. I have so many issues with this book that I'll get into further down, but for those who don't want to read that much know that this book feels like false advertising and instead of delivering what it promises, it just gives random sentences here and there tying in the semi-applicable anecdotes to the greater theme of over indulgence. I do think it is important to read bad science books sometimes so that we are able to identify egregious claims and self-aggrandizing narratives for what they are.

Now  for the more specific complaints. The AUDACITY of this lady to compare her loving steamy romance novels to someone with a severe and life altering sex addiction was insane. And then to regularly bring up her steamy romance novel "addiciton" when discussing people whose lives were nearly or completely ruined by their addictions is one of the craziest things I have ever read.

Reading another anecdote about a young adult with problematic marijuana usage and anxiety who abstained for a month and then all her anxiety disappeared? Really??? Come on, lady.

She's apparently been a psychiatrist for decades yet she so clearly cherry-picked all the case examples provided in this book to align with her ideas perfectly and that's super annoying.

Also is she a majority shareholder for AA? I've never seen a professional in the field of mental health counseling in general, especially those who specialize in addiction praise AA so aggressively with literally no acknowledgement of the flaws (of which there are many) of 12 step programs.

Yeah this book kinda sucked and the author definitely sucks. It had some interesting ideas but overall I wish I didn't give her my money because after reading this book I can honestly say she doesn't deserve it.
