Demon Copperhead

A needed read on Appalachia, the opioid crisis, and people left in the dust by capitalism. The effect it had on me was similar to a modern retelling of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Be warned, this book is incredibly and relentlessly sad, but beautifully written. The feeling, the emotion, the train of thought, and worldview are all so evocative—this is a voice we don't hear often, but a light should be shined on it as our extremely recent history.
