The Boy on the Bridge by M. R. Carey
5.0

The incomparable Finty Williams converted me to the joy of audio books. But Zombie fiction? Oh, no, this is so much more. Scientifically ingenious, the characters are fully formed, fascinating and remind us of what it is to be human.

My wise big brother led me to the first story but I came to The Boy on the Bridge all by myself.

There is no point comparing the books. The shocks delivered in The Girl with all the Gifts can only be shocking once. But I enjoyed The Boy on The Bridge every bit as much. The narrative drive is inexorable - the ticking time bomb of Samira Khan’s pregnancy, the chasing hungries, the coup back at Beacon. There are many secrets: love affairs; betrayals and a disarmed radio; a break-through withheld by reclusive, awkward Steven Greaves; and oodles of conflict, from the violently physical to ethical and political.

I listen to audio books when I am far from home, when lack of sleep makes my eyes too tired to see. Captivated by this story, I continued to listen when travelling, a time I normally use to read. So have I read The Boy on The Bridge or experienced it aurally? Who cares, I loved it.

The ending is stunning. Satisfied but bereft, I missed Carey’s cadence and Finty’s timbre and tone so much that I went right back to the start of The Girl with all the Gifts again.
