This book is less about a haunted house and more about what happens when you abuse magic, as Tananarive Due mentions in her acknowledgment. The first chapter reels you in, but the rest of the book is slow and predictable. I don’t think I could have gotten through this without having the audiobook playing while reading. I enjoy Due’s writing and I liked the different points of view, but felt this needed more editing because she gave away what would happen taking away the suspense/surprise. It is a creepy and tragic story with a sweet ending, but I wanted more from it.
