Grave of the Fireflies
by James R. Abrams, Akiyuki Nosaka
Grave of Fireflies by Akiyuki Nosaka portrays the plight of the innocent and vulnerable, caught in the crossfire of war. While the historical context of the war looms in the background, the story primarily centers on the harrowing journey of Seita and Setsuko as they grapple with loss, the cruel realities of war, griveously stricken by diseases and malnutrition.
For some, Grave of Fireflies intents to potray Japan as the victim despite their war crimes. However, to me, it impactfully shows that war benefits only those in positions of power—the leaders and governments—while civilians, especially children like Seita and Setsuko, are abandoned and left to fend for themselves.
Nosaka's own experiences and emotions, particularly his grief and guilt over the loss of his sister during the war, reverberate through the narrative. His pain resonates deeply.
The bond between Seita and Setsuko, forged even in the midst of suffering, is both heart-warming and tragic, constantly had me bawling my eyes out.
“Setsuko won’t be so lonely, fireflies will be at her side, flying up, flying down, now flying to the side, won’t be long the fireflies’ll be gone, but you go up to heaven with those fireflies.”
