The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson
5.0

I don't know if I will ever recover from the ending of this book.

I cannot think of the last time a book has made me laugh AND cry like this one. My husband came home right as I was finishing this book and immediately went "Wow, you've been crying for a while haven't you?" I was devastated. With that being said, I need more people to talk about this series. Sanderson never disappoints, and this is no exception. I appreciated all of the Cosmere connections that are made in this book, but it is my one knock that you have to read at least 5 books (original Mistborn, Elantris, and Emperor's Soul) before you can even start this series. However, no complaints otherwise.

Random Favorite Parts:
1. Wayne. His quips consistently cracked me up. Funniest character I have read to date. I would spend a good 20 minutes explaining a setting to my husband just so I could recite one comment that made me laugh. While he provided comedic relief, I also appreciated his thoughts about people's communication and culture. As someone who has a Bachelor's in Communication, I found the observations refreshing.

2. How can we be so sure that we know what is right? This is a common theme throughout this series, and I feel like this book drives the point home. So often it feels easy to say what should or shouldn't happen, but it is harder to understand that everything is held in tension. I feel like Sanderson approach this complex topic with an ease that I didn't think possible. If you like food for thought, he definitely gives it to you.

3. The various time jumps at the end of the book. Without spoiling anything, seeing the intention that was made by a certain character was heartwarming. All the ways that their true character impacted their decisions was just further proof of their depth. Still reeling a month later.
