Well that’s unfortunate. I enjoyed this book quite a bit less this time. And I don’t think it has anything to do with reading it for school. It’s still a very good book in concept and (mostly) in execution, but I’m not all that emotionally invested anymore. The characters are well enough written, but they all sound the same. Character voice, I’ve come to notice, is severely lacking in classic novels. I’ll still count this as a book I enjoy and recommend, it’s just not all what I said last year.

I'll be honest, I did not expect to like this book, at least as much as I did. I completely understand how this was revolutionary, completely ahead of its time. As an observant Jew, I was a little off-put by the amount of Christian devotion and how much that drew many of the characters. By the end though, I was nice and worked well with Jane's acts of individuality.
Jane...I love her so much! All of the characters are absolutely incredible and lovable, but Jane hits a special place in my heart. There is nothing to stop her will, but she is also devoutly religious and very much feminine and motherly to Adel and her students.
While I don't think I will find much more in this book when rereading it (which I certainly will) this story and the characters open app conversations that seemingly have no end, and I love that! Love, marriage, religion and individuality: all such interesting topics and so vitally important.
5/5, honestly one of my new favorites.
