I've always known this to be one of my all-time favorite childhood books, tied with Dahl's other story "The BFG".
I think the 'otherness' of the protagonist really spoke to me as an outcast in my school. I was always different, and frequently teased/bullied by my peers. The way that Matilda used her special powers for good really brought some light into my life.
The movie was also amazing.
