I Am America (And So Can You!)
by Paul Dinello, Richard Dahm, Stephen Colbert, Allison Silverman
Can I give this book zero stars?
It started off ok - I bit in-your-face as far as some of the humor goes, which isn't a huge surprise given that it's Colbert. I chuckled a few times in the beginning, but soon noticed that the same old jokes kept cropping up. The topic (religion, immigration, science, etc) would change, as would a related detail (Catholics, border control, evolution, etc) but the punchline was pretty much the same.
It also started to feel a bit gimmicky - the ribbon page marker, the stickers to mark things you agreed with, and the stickers to put on other books that would be Colbert-approved - it almost felt like Colbert was trying to distract the reader from the actual content, lest someone noticed that it actually didn't contain anything.
Colbert is best handled in 30 minute increments with commercial breaks. And while I've never been a regular watcher of his show, his book has made me even less likely to do so in the future. It was a pretty annoying read.
