Christmas in Bayberry by Jennifer Faye

4.0

I really liked the town of Bayberry and I’m happily a sucker for anything taking place at Christmas, in winter where it snows, I don't see any snow at Christmas living down under. Hallmark Christmas movies are my big not-so-guilty pleasure and I watch them year-round. Bayberry is picturesque and quintessential of the Hallmark brand. There might even be a mysterious Santa lurking around.
Kate is sweet but overwhelming as a character. Her almost endless positivity seems exhausting at times and I don’t know how she fits everything she does into her waking hours each day. Her effervescent energy eventually draws Wesley into the Christmas magic around him.
It might not be clear to Wesley but for all his trying to distance himself from his father’s life, he’s living it but in a different way. He is determined to succeed in one job, in one place, and bring his mother into his world. It doesn’t occur to him to ask her what she wants.
Serendipity intervenes as it often does, and Wesley finds himself in one of his favorite towns from his nomadic youth. He can’t help but reminisce about the scant time he lived in Bayberry because they were some of his happiest memories. Whether Kate knows this or not, she takes him to places he will think fondly of in a bid to convince him to save her beloved family business.
I know Wes’s mother asked him to go to Bayberry as a favor for Kate’s Aunt (His mother's friend) but it’s never explained why his company sends him there.
As always in these delightful books, there is a recipe at the end, and this is one on my list to try, Beef Stew with a substitute for the regular wine.
The culmination moved swiftly with the expected bumps in the road. I loved how things went for the candle company and Kate’s Aunt.
As much as I enjoyed this, I felt it was a touch long. There were a few elements I hoped were bigger and more critical to the plot, but their absence didn’t detract from the flow.
This is a perfect read for anyone who loves Hallmark Christmas movies, small towns, and happy endings.
