American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Martin J. Sherwin, Kai Bird

challenging emotional informative inspiring reflective sad slow-paced

4.75

I think Robert Oppenheimer is one of the most fascinating people I have ever read about.

His life is incredibly interesting and sad at the same time. What he accomplished at Los Alamos is a phenomenal achievement of science, and yet what happened in the aftermath of that achievement is nothing short of a tragedy.

I was engrossed at almost every step of the story. Both authors do a great job of laying out his life and attempting to explain every twist in this amazing biography.

As could be expected, things were slow to get started, but nevertheless, it was interesting learning about the many influences that shaped this incredible man.

The later events of his life were obviously the most interesting part of the book, and learning about the various historical events he had a hand in was astounding, he managed these moments with such poise and eloquence that has rarely been seen.
