I think readers can figure out the secret by the 1/3 mark of the book, making the second third feel extremely protracted and the final third is exactly as rewarding as expected. Thus, nothing huge here. After about 30% through, I set an audiobook to 1.3x speed and multitasked for the rest of it or else I would have ultimately put it down.

There's so much I like about this book in theory, but the characters left me longing for the dynamics of The Haunting of Hill House. It's a good parallel to demonstrate the types of things this book didn't have. Of course, short novel vs full series show, you have more time for character development, just saying that's what I ended up longing for.

The characters are flawed, but I ultimately had no moment where I got a feeling of who they were. Who they were SUPPOSED to be, yeah... Like I could name them by their adjectives. But I constantly was trying to relate to them and just not able to. Like, did they even feel empathy for the dead people or just constantly care only about themselves? That would have been interesting if it had ever come up in their arcs or near the end of the story, as opposed to just happy endings for potentially apathetic people and lack of clarity in their motivations for achieving justice.

An entertaining story, though! But, if you read or watch a lot of stories, I doubt this one will shake you. But a fun read if you're looking for something enjoyable.
