In the Time of the Butterflies
by Julia Alvarez
This book gives a human face to the struggle for democracy in the Dominican Republic and it humanizes the leaders of the fourteenth of June movement, all be it a combination of truths and fiction.
The writing feels intimate and the stories of the four sisters is beautifully interwoven. I love the counter pose between the casual, personal tone of the writing and the dark content of the story.
