People Like Us

Hmm, this is a weird one.
There where a lot of things that I enjoyed about this book. The fluent sexuality but the fact that it wasn't just glossed over is one of these things. It's something that's addressed in a way that feels real and that has consequences. Gay isn't invisible, and I really appreciate that. I also enjoyed the main character and the fact that she had tons of different relationships with different people. She's seemed complex and dynamic, like she could surprise you with her actions and decisions.
The book is also adept at keeping you on your toes regarding it's central mystery, and has some lovely bits of prose. It's also a disturbing story at some parts, which I really liked. It reminded me a bit of Gillian Flynn.
The things I didn't like and that brought the book down for me are several. While it's YA and sometimes you must allow for a little indulgence in the genre, it was just a little too YA for my taste. Heavy focus on the romance without explaining why, lots of drama for drama's sake. It borrowed too much from Pretty Little Liars. But it's still an enjoyable read. I got through it in one sitting.
If you have a gay mystery boarding school itch, then this book might gently scratch it.
