Rereading this 20 years after my first read through has been really interesting and eye-opening. Picking up on the simplicity & intentionality of Camus’ writing was a pleasure.
98% of this book felt quite dark and dreary – a man stumbling through life, wanting to be liked, having no depths to his relationships, lonely, and directionless.
I’m still trying to understand what, if anything, he specifically represents.
Devoid of morality, emotions, and only having opinions on things that directly impact his senses, when he truly understands that his life will be end, he does a 180.
At first the last line – “I [hope] they greet me with cries of hate“ was jarring, but I think maybe it’s triumphant? In the little time he has left, he can create his own set of values, desires, things that bring him happiness (that he finally identifies feeling in the last few sentences).
External acceptance no longer matters and he is completely free.
