I've long been a fan of Leitch's, his nonfiction and fiction. I enjoyed his first two books, How Lucky most, but felt they were not fully capturing the scope of his talents. In his journalism and his newsletter, Leitch displays a sense of humor and pathos that are wide ranging, and in Lloyd McNeil he is finally able to synthesize all of that, all of what makes his writing engaging and memorable. Perhaps I'm the perfect audience, having a remarkably similar background as Leitch, but I think the quality of this book will speak to those who aren't products of central Illinois and parents and sports fans and liberal and so on. I felt a lot of things reading this book, but mostly that I didn't want to put it down. Leitch really did great work here.
