I loved the majority of this book. It was a little darker than I typically read with such explicit mentions of suicidal thoughts. However, I found the plot compelling and the shifting perspectives didn't turn me away. I even found the deaths to be reasonable in response to the circumstances the. Characters were in. The reason I'm giving this a lower rating is because there were moments throughout the book where I genuinely thought to myself "there's no way this character would say that" and it drew me out of the story. Specifically in two scenes: one where Bernard basically says that Mayor Jahns can eat shit and die (and then literally kills her) and one where Knox suddenly is Karl Marx and can give amazing speeches even thought before this he was the string, silent, and broody type. Both of these instances were so far out of left field for me that I had to lower the rating. I am excited to read the next book in the series though!
