The Best and the Brightest
by David Halberstam
Phew, I finished it! This almost 700 page very small print book was interesting but still a struggle to plow through as it was just too detailed for me. Frankly a book half this size could have easily made the point that our government failed in Vietnam policy from the very beginning. He weaves at least thirty short biographies of the main figures into the narrative and many of them were informative. Having lived through a majority of the time period written about I learned more than I ever did as a kid since the news about Vietnam was so manipulated. I'd hesitate to recommend this book unless you are someone who wants a thorough, and I mean thorough examination of the history of how the politicians blundered at every step of our foray into Vietnam.
