We Can Be Heroes by Kyrie McCauley

Beck, a fierce artist, and Vivian, a perfectionist and former star athlete, are both grieving the death of their best friend. Cassie was horrifically shot and killed by her boyfriend, the would-be heir of the firearms corporation that runs the town. When Cassie visits them as a ghost, Vivian and Beck decide to take revenge, putting up murals around town that tell her story and the truth.
This was a unique, powerful novel about the impact of abuse and gun violence. It alternates between Beck's, Vivian's, and Cassie's perspectives (the latter told in verse), broken up with podcast transcripts. Its message is such an important one, and it gets it across so well.
My main complaint is the poor handling of illegal substance abuse - the character doing most of the drinking had alcoholic parents, and it's just awful that her decisions are never portrayed as wrong. I also wish the book was a little more detailed, the backstory of the friends explained more, the podcast more realistic. It was still a worthwhile read, though.
