i'm not saying anything new here, but it IS weird that this novel, ostensibly about creation, about legacy, about how women can and did live in the world, about a writer, has so little interest in the actual literary work that ITS PROTAGONIST actually produced. it is lovely, enchanting work! it had an impact! why sidestep it like that? why choose marie de france at all? there are so many other options!

that said, despite my frustration, despite the way marie's thoughts could be sort of modern in a somewhat too obvious way, despite the way complicated logistical difficulties and conspiracies are just... solved... it is a beautiful novel and i actually really enjoyed it. marie sometimes had an incredibly unhinged, tragic michael scott energy that killed me dead. leprosy be upon ye
