The Hoodlum Army by Elizabeth Roderick

What a fun read!

For many years, I have been reading non-fiction pretty exclusively, so this book was a great break from my usual fare. When I found time to read, it was really hard to put down, and I found myself sitting in my 'feed room' all dressed and ready to go do some work on the farm ... sitting there for thirty minutes reading instead.

I found myself wishing I had read this when I was a tween/teen - perhaps because there's something really charming about reading neurodivergent and LGBT+ characters - especially when those characters' neurodivergence isn't blown up into a big dramatic tragedy and is instead handled like it's totally normal. The same-sex romance between two of the main characters was also very sweet and engaging.

This book was hilarious at times in a way I really enjoyed - dry comedic turns of phrase or one-liners casually dropped and moved on from. The way the humor was treated just made it even funnier, because the author didn't make a big to-do about it.

If you're looking for a fun summer read, definitely check this one out. And follow the author on twitter so you can keep up with new books coming out!
