I'm pretty conflicted on how I feel after finishing Assassin's Apprentice. So instead of full thoughts, here are snippets because it's easier (some may include spoilers).
Positives:
- Gorgeous, atmospheric writing
- Character work with Fitz is phenomenal and I love his character
- The 'character telling his life story' style was a good experience and made sense for the type of story that was being told by Hobb.
Negatives:
- Very loose plot. I don't mind a character-driven story, but I want some kind of plot to hook me.
- Honestly, Fitz's life is pretty depressing.Between being abandoned by his maternal family, his father not wanting him, being treated as less than due to his 'bastard' status, Burrich constantly giving up on him because of his misunderstanding of the Skill/Wit, HIS DOGS ALWAYS DYING, being abused and gaslit by Galen - like damn..kid could not catch a break.
- The story (for me) finally got interesting around page 380 and then just...fell flat.
- Many parts of the plot (especially the ending) felt more tell than show. I wanted to see the action and story play out, not just hear about it after the fact.
Overall, I wasn't necessarily ever bored with the story and I do really like Fitz and am interested in seeing where his life went after the events in Assassin's Apprentice.
