I really wanted to love this escapist read, especially with such a great premise, but the coincidences and plot contrivances were just too much, and it veered into cheese territory for me. I do think it would have helped if it had been clearer upfront that this was magical realism (which, for me, is actually a win!).
That said, the fact that I finished it at all is a testament to the writing, it’s engaging and well-crafted, even if the story itself didn’t quite land for me.
