The life and times of one of the greatest comic creators of all time…

Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics by Tom Scioli is a wonderful graphic novel detailing the king of comics, the legendary Jack Kirby.

The writer does a fairly thorough job covering his childhood and early formative years.

More importantly, the story also indicates the influences that impacted Kirby and some of his ideas. They also aren’t afraid to cover almost everything he worked on…even if they are minor characters that readers have probably never heard of.

A sizable section is also dedicated to Kirby’s service in World War II. The man was as much of an inspiration as the characters he created.

Unfortunately, any good hero also needs a good villain…and about half way through we meet the next kind of villain…one that starts off as a friend.

Stan Lee cannot be defended for his actions. Just look at anything he wrote solo without “assistance”, and you’ll see he thrived with good collaborators…which is the whole point of the marvel method. A writer trying to take sole credit for a story at the time is a supervillain origin story waiting to happen.

I highly recommend if for no other reason to see the world Kirby grew up in, appreciate how we was ALWAYS busy, and how pop culture helped him shape comics today (even if they were characters he originally created).
