I did enjoy this book but when compared to my favorite books by Butler this one does not stand out. Butler seemed to love exploring the intricacies of codependent and toxic relationships in her stories. You see it in Kindred, Fledgling and even a bit in her earthseed novels. I thought this was an interesting take on the theme. It reminded me of the dynamic in Kindred because both the main characters are strong women who at one point submit to slavery because it is easier for them in many ways than to push back. This book — like kindred — also showed the mix of hate and love that can come from such toxic relationships. I think like all Butler novels it was very well written and impactful. It just wasn’t my favorite of her characters or worlds.
