Talk Sweetly to Me by Courtney Milan

3.0

"Talk Sweetly to Me" the 4.5 and final book in the Brothers Sinisters series finishes with secondary character Stephan Shaughnessy, writer of the very manly and satrorial column for Free's Women's Newspaper. His neighbor and crush is Ms. Rose Sweetly, a mathematical genius who is a computer for a known astronomer. They both like each other, but she get super shy around him and gets confident when she's speaking about math. He is a charmer and has a bit of a reputation, but he decided to get himself in some mischief when he asks her to tutor him in scientific theories in an effort to get close to her.

I liked that Rose is non your typical heroine in all ways of speaking. She's of African descent and a mathematical genius. So not only does she have to deal with race and gender issues, but also the question of her intellect. There were times though I admit where Rose gets so into her mathematical talk that I zoned out and started skimming so kudos for Stephan to find her fascinating while going on and on!

I think had the novella been full length we would of gotten a bit more depth, a bit more of what it was like to be an African English mathematical middle class woman in the 19th century. Instead I think this was more of a vignette. There's certainly a beginning, middle and end, but of conflict, there's very little. The drama is quickly resolved as is the ending. Regardless Rose was an interesting character and I loved her interactions with her sister.
