A really interesting spin on “The Goose Girl” with a heisty, found family vibe that I loved (it was a tad reminiscent of Six if Crows to me in some ways). The prose was beautiful and evocative and really immersed me in the book. The medieval German-inspired world and mythology were really fun and I loved how prevalent the mythology was. It’s heavier on politics than action as well, which is my preference, and I liked seeing how the characters solved the situations/problems at hand.

Some people may find the beginning/middle a bit slow, but I enjoyed every part of it, in large part because of my love for the prose and characters. The characters were compelling and multidimensional, especially our MC, Vanja. I really liked how prickly and morally grey she was, while also being a very sympathetic character - I understood exactly why she was the way she was and I couldn’t help cheering her on. I did find the ending was a bit fast for me, but I still liked how things wrapped up overall. I also enjoyed the casual queerness of the world and the demisexual rep, and I thought the romances were fun, especially the sapphic one!
