The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang

5.0

An accomplishing and action-packed adult fantasy novel with East Asian inspired worldbuilding and very nuanced characters. The worldbuilding is excellent and that immediately pulled me into the fictional Universe and the magical system. In addition, the characters are very engaging (and also diverse). I found myself thinking about the complexity of human nature as they are all very well fleshed out e.g. Misaki's inner struggles between choosing her family vs the truth, her husband's silence suffering which he opened up many years later, and Misaki making amends and giving her long estranged friend a hope for the future. I probably cried over the final 1/3 of the book bc the main characters grew on me and their emotions are so raw and real to me.

If anything, reading this novel had me realise the importance of staying present with the people you care about and how one could show that care through so many layers. That the people that you care about will come and go but you could choose to cherish these precious moments as fully as possible. I highly recommend this masterpiece to anyone who's in the mood for an epic fantasy with expansive worldbuilding & complex characters.
