I'm not censoring a word here. I don't really like the censoring of serious topics such as rape, abuse, suicide, etc. etc. So, there's your warning. I will be talking about dark subject matter.
I need people to be honest with themselves when they read books like this. This isn't revolutionary kickass feminist writing.
It's wattpad torture porn with a woman writing this with one hand. It's misogynistic, gender essentialist propaganda written by a fifth grader.
Sadie is a cardboard cutout of an uber special marysue who is so perfect, an alpha AND fae princess with a tortured past filled with child abuse, casual sexual harassment and something called 'The Numb' that makes real people who do dissociate from trauma look like a joke.
Oh, but it's explained in book three! There shouldn't have been a book one.
Page 65. had a graphic rape scene (or attempt, I didn't finish it) and Jasmine Mas decided it was a good idea to not add this to a trigger warning's list. Her warning said "brief mentions" not full on depiction.
This is the second time this has happened to me and both times have caused me to spiral and feel shitty about my own past. For the love of God, if you're going to put trigger warnings in your book, tag them correctly.
There's also victim shamey nonesense later on in the book as my friend skipped through it. Something about how Sadie never acts like a victim. Which, Jasmine, I hope that you never meet a victim of these kinds of abuse in person. You're a shameful writer who has a lot of soul-searching and misogyny unpacking to do.
Your work comes off as cruel towards women, towards survivors of child abuse and to survivors of rape. I would say do better but I know you won't because Blood Of Hercules is exactly the same.
Do us a favor and put down the pen.
