This book had a lot of expectation for me. But unfortunately it didn’t meet it ends…. A retelling of Hades and Persephone, but make it contemporary.
The beginning was so good. Kal aka Kallum is a “doctor” who is in the mafia world. From a very young age, he suffered the loss of his mother due to cancer. His father is only a sperm donor since Kal was born from an affair and his father didn’t even want his ‘son’… so he decided to go the Rucci. The parents of Elena. Our female lead.
The Rucci scoup him out of the streets and ‘raised’ him to make him work for his mafia-ish works.
Elena, as the eldest of the family, she carries the stress of what her father wants her for: his reputation and money. She has the beauty of her mother, in which her mom has been jealous of since her birth…
She also has a pomegranate tattoo on her rib and a love for poetry.
The plot starts on when Kal is meeting with Elena’s father, Rafael Rucci, in order to ask her hand in marriage, by showing him a video of them having sex… bruh…
Someone has sent it to him and was prove that Elena has asked Kallum to take her virginity. Which he did and loved the mess of “blood”. Thus, this video became a liability for the Rucci regime. Since, it will cost a lot of money for Rafael, he accepts the marriage suggestion and make Kal kill Elena’s now death ex-fiancé. Her father actually brought a priest to finalize the marriage beside the death body.
Before that while they were preparing for the murder and the force marriage… Elena was getting herself prepared to a marriage she never wanted, because she knows that she will not have any freedom from this marriage.
Her mother is all over her and is clearly showing jealousy toward the bride.
When she comes face to face to the Kallum Anderson… she doesn’t seem to be shocked to see the dead body of her fiancé but was with Kallum. Obviously, her body reacts up when she hears and sees Kal.
—
She was forced to have a wedding, with her body pressed against his, that shows arousal and a hand wrapped around her neck as the priest finalize the vows.
—
Kallum needed a wife, so he can obtain the money from his grandfather: only gotten after getting married and also getting revenge against the Rucci Family… thus, Elena is the perfect target…
—
As they get ‘closer’, her feelings for him and his seems to restrain himself because of money and the revenge planned for years… he does keep secrets from her that relates her mother… obviously, something that I wish the author didn’t include bcz it hurted me… more than I taught it would.
—
They are always horny. Since the first time they got together, their body and mind can’t seem to move away from it. There are so much sexual tension between them….
—
When they finally do it, we realize that Kallum has a blood:/knife kink. Which is funny because he is a ‘doctor’… when he first took her virginity, he had marked her with his first initial between her thighs. Which is something he likes to reopen it again and again and again….
—
Her parents has created a rumour on how their daughter has been kidnapped and is in danger…
—
When the time comes that she wants to go to her sister’s recitals, she will get to know the secret and the true reason why Kallum has been decided to do to her family…: the ‘affair’ between him and her mother, Carmen… before Elena, he would write poetry for Carmen and Elena taught that they were for her… which made her feelings for Kal begin… when, the time came for him to ask Carmen to leave her husband, she refused….(this is all the true meaning of grooming… but it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t hurt the way he has used Elena for his idea of revenge.
—
both Elena and Kal go to their ‘seperate ways’. But Kallum realizes that he truly loves her, but still sends her an annulment agreement. Which makes Elena go back to where Kal is and have makeup sex. After that, Elena explains that Carmen has been grooming him all along and that it wasn’t his fault.(one thing I like about her is that she realizes that she has been groomed…). As they make up, Kallum tells her his childhood, through his lose of his mother to him leaving The Rucci company behind… of he also confesses that he loves her…
—
the plot was sex obviously, but this book had so much potential when it comes to the plot that I was so disappointed… sex is the only chemistry that they ever had…but again the sex is really hot. Like dang boy, wish I was Elena… the possessiveness whenever someone tired to hurt her…
TW: death of a parent, blood, torture, gore, childhood abuse, grooming, affair, trauma, graphic sexual content.
