So Dear to My Heart by Sterling North
3.0
The Disney movie is better :-)
The book focuses more on the general life in Cat Hollow and Fulton Corners. It's nice glimpse of what it looks like, how people act, and the atmosphere of country backwoods.
Also, there's a lot more backstory given about Jerry and his family life. In the movie, the focus is on Danny the lamb.
Granny and her Puritan ways are portrayed as harsh and outdated, but I really appreciated her dedication to God's Word. She was bitter and unforgiving, but she changed in that regard in the end.
Jerry at first doesn't share Granny's regard for God, but thankfully he changes too. He identifies with the Good Shepherd and it's nice to see him pray and pour his heart out to God, and repeat the Bible verses he learned when he was younger.
The county fair is the cherry on the top--real nice description!
