The Girl With No Past by Kathryn Croft

I was immediately intrigued by The Girl With No Past as soon as I read the synopsis. The only thing putting me off was the comparison to Gone Girl and The Girl On The Train. I did enjoy both books, but I hate books that are compared to heavily hyped books. However, I think this book stands out in its own right. I found it to be an engaging read, which kept me turning the pages!
This book centres around the main protagonist Leah. We find out that Leah lives a very solitary life. Something happened to her many years ago and we, as readers, don’t find out what it was until nearer the end of the novel. It’s dark. It’s very dark. The reader gets to explore from Leah’s perspective in the present day and also her schooldays… up until the event that changed her life. Leah is suffering from guilt and very much isolating herself from everyone. She begins to wonder if she should start to rebuild her life and move on from what had happened. As she tries to move on, Leah begins to be tormented. She tries to work out who it is that doesn’t want her to forget her past.
What I particularly liked about this book was that it made me doubt all of the characters. I had worked out who it was before it was revealed-but it’s certainly not crystal clear or obvious and I appreciate that. I have to admit, I found myself doubting Leah at times. She wasn’t the most reliable of narrators.
I am intrigued to read more from Kathryn Croft. Pyschological thrillers are one of my favourite genres of book to read and I was certainly impressed by this book!
