Soul of the Deep
by Natasha Bowen
adventurous
dark
reflective
fast-paced
In the author's note, she says, "Soul of the Deep is the sequel to a story that explores magic, myth, and history. It is a continuation of the celebration of West Africa, spirituality, legends, creatures, and magical beings." The essence of the story is exactly that, and I couldn't love it more. I love all the history that is in these books. Not only in real inspiration from the slave trade and past conflict, but in the richness of myths and lore. I love that the author included some of the more sinister beings of folklore. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first until I got to the end. Even though I saw the twist coming, it fit perfectly within the story. I really enjoyed the way the conflict played out and the rest of the story after.
