Empire in Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky

3.0

Good, not great. The world premise is extremely interesting and, at times, well thought out. Other moments, I felt Tchaikovsky's prose was awkward and worldbuilding incomplete. About half of the writing was done in past perfect tense, so a heavy use of "had." Without a number of important worldbuilding elements, most notably language, the alternate reality felt shallow and two dimensional.

Nevertheless, the characters were interesting and the prose engaging enough, when not littered with unnecessary "hads," to hold my attention and even get my blood pumping a few times. I'll probably go back to the series at some point, but not in front of other, more reputable reads.
