The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

5.0

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is the story of a girl who experiences a traumatic event - the death of her parents - on the same day that she first kisses another girl. As Cameron settles into being labeled as an orphan, those feelings that she had on that fateful day are only intensified by the girls that she encounters. One girl in particular - a beautiful cowgirl with a boyfriend - ends in her downfall and eventual registration at a religious boarding school with a mission to "cure" gay and lesbian students. At the school, she finds a group of students who are struggling to find a way to make life at the school livable while still being true to their own feelings.

The book includes some sexual experiences, so I would recommend for high school students. The book explores the themes of acceptance, trust, and fear. Although it takes place in the past (early 1990s), a similar story would not be seen as strange today. While we have made a lot of progress in terms of LGBTQ youth, The Miseducation of Cameron Post reminds us that our words and our feelings towards others have consequences, and that everyone deserves to stay true to themselves.
