I hope Stephanie keeps sharing her experiences so those who become emotionally connected to her while sinking into her books and essays can no longer look away from the systemic unfairness of trying to survive as a single mother, as a coparent with an abusive ex, as a person living in poverty.

The “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” myth is properly kicked in the face by showing how someone with all the knowledge, potential and grit (ugh that word) is repeatedly smacked down back into her place by people and US systems that don’t want to help those who genuinely need it.

Her writing is unflinching and important, and I hope this book is read and heard by legions of Americans who have the power to change the systems that relentlessly failed Stephanie and millions like her.
