I am such a sucker for a coming of age American road trip story but truly WHAT was the point of this book? No themes, no character development, just Maren being Maren. Was expecting some kind of allegory or metaphor but there was just nothing. I did like the descriptions of the road trip stops and the perspective of a young drifter but so much of this was unrealistic and contrived. Maren never sounded like a teen and especially didn’t sound like an 8 year old when she recounted her past.
