This book has a dichotomy of being very silly while also being very serious. It's a delicate balance that I think the author captured very well. Rusty and Gem are both incredibly deep and complex people, and both have a lot of stories to tell throughout the book while they're getting to know one another. However despite this the book maintains an overall feeling of levity, making Rusty and Gem's journey still bright and hopeful.
I liked this one just as much as books 1 and 2. Rusty and Gem, although they have their struggles, clearly are meant for each other. Watching Gem slowly but surely befriending Rusty was so nice. I love Rusty and his character's grouchiness felt completely valid and not overdone or like the author was just trying to write a grumpy character you know? I always really enjoy this series and am looking forward to what comes next!
