The premise was interesting, but the entire first half of the book was without any sort of dialogue markings. It made things difficult to follow, and while the reason why was revealed, it still felt like I was too removed from the story with this style of writing to connect with the characters, or feel the stakes that were being laid out in the story.
In part two, when it is revealed that Ava was spinning a fake story for the detective to get out of prison time, it did not hit for me. Hearing the other side of what really happened was mildly interesting, but ultimately it fell flat.
