We see  glimpses of innocence and beauty within the descriptions of Herat and Kabul through the eyes of Mariam and Laila. The decline of the cities is also easily reflected in the shattering lives of the main characters. There is never a truly happy ending just as life itself isn’t a bundle of happy roses. Yet, the connections, missed opportunities, deaths, and the small bits of peace and hope were enough to keep me transfixed with emotion. I will not lie and say I didn’t cry, because I did several times.
