i genuinely cant remember if ive ever come across a book where the ending obliterated my opinion of a book this badly before, oh my god.

up until the last section of this book, i thought it was relatively good. i thought it was a bit slow and boring at points, but i figured it was a slower burn horror/thriller book and that it would all make sense in the end as a lot of horror often tends to, but the ending for this book is, bar none, the worst ending to a book ive read this year. maybe even the last few years. its just...its almost laughable, really.

the plot for this is shaky at BEST. its definitely a mysterious plot that takes a long time to unfold, but the climax of the book is just not worth the time spent to get there.
like theyre witches who do...what, exactly? get women pregnant so they themselves can be reborn, on and on, forever? im sorry, but thats just flat out stupid.

the characters are, at first glance, well-rounded and well-written, but as the story goes on they all became so trite, so stereotypical archetypal hat its almost an insult. like wow, shocker, the husband was cheating on his wife? he only sees women as 'things' that can produce children for him? the wife (while the book itself seems to go against this) is formed by the idea that she'll only be whole once she has a child? boring. its just plain boring!!!

also, i HATE that the book tries to push the narrative that annas husband and her doctors arent listening to her because shes a woman. its not as if annas experiencing a normal set of circumstances and people are writing her off for being 'hysterical': she experiencing things that she cant prove to other people and its not their fault for not believing her. that part of the plot continued to irk me.

the front of his book has a blurb that refers to it as a 'feminist version' of rosemarys baby, and im sorry but that couldnt be further from the truth. rosemarys baby is an absolute train wreck of a book, but this book is, quite frankly, in about the same league. its not a 'feminist' anything; a book isnt simply feminist by virtue of being about women. this book is a waste of time and energy to read, and i thoroughly regret spending time on it. dont be like me: skip reading this.
