A dying wizard tries to pass on his powers to an eighth son of an eighth son, as they do. Except that this “son” is actually a daughter. So ensues a girl’s life as the world’s first wizard, and all the shenanigans that come with it.
I have to say that this book is as funny as it is lighthearted. Terry Pratchett took real world issues and made them seem ridiculous with a cast of eccentric characters and odd mishaps. Written in a time when things like feminism were just beginning to be a loud political point, it is softly written about.
Granny Weatherwax deserves a whole long vacation from being the village witch after looking after Eskarina and her tutelage. Esk is a typical know-it-all child, with powers that shouldn’t be possible. Overall a fun read.
Graphic: Misogyny, Sexism
Moderate: Child abuse, Death, Classism
Minor: Body horror, Racial slurs, Violence
