Know My Name by Chanel Miller

5 ⭐️ alert!!! I wish this was required reading with the following aims: that every incoming freshman at college would discuss consent, that every cis straight man would finally understand what catcalling feels like (let alone sexual assault), that every womxn wouldn’t feel alone. This is one of the most powerful memoirs I’ve ever read. I highly recommend this as an audiobook, as Miller reads her own story.

Chanel Miller was known as Emily Doe when Brock Turner went on trial for sexual assaulting her. Miller wrote a victim impact statement that was heard at trial and went viral, and was even read aloud for Congress. In her harrowing memoir, she recounts her story from the trauma of the assault through the agonizing trial to her continued life as a survivor.

Miller explores many topics that I will continue reflecting on for the rest of my life: the flaws of our judicial system, how victims are treated by the media and law, how womxn attempt to navigate in this world ruled by fear of men, etc. She handles each topic so well that I often would pause the audiobook and think about the points she raised. I highly recommend this book for everyone to learn from but note that the entire book is triggering due to the content.
