Say You’ll Remember Me is a standalone novel by Katie McGarry. I’ve read all her Pushing the Limits books, as well as Thunder Road, so I was looking forward to more of her stories. She didn’t disappoint!

This book surrounds the poised and perfect governor’s daughter, Ellison, and the delinquent boy Hendrix. At least, that’s how the media perceives them. In reality, Ellison isn’t as perfect as she appears on camera, and Hendrix isn’t as bad as anyone thinks.

Ellison, or Elle, has a lot of pressure being the governor’s daughter. She has to look perfect and act perfect at all times, never letting herself falter. She has to paint on a face everyday that isn’t her own. She’s told she doesn’t know what she really wants because she’s young, that she should let her parents make the decisions for her. More and more she feels like she’s being molded into something that they want her to be rather than who she really is. She wants to dress down. She wants to wear her glasses instead of colored contacts to make her eyes pop more. She wants to wear her hair in a bun, not have to always have it perfectly curled. She wants to be herself, but she doesn’t know how when she also wants to support her dad in his campaign.

Hendrix, or Drix, on the other hand, just got out of a second chance program for teens. He’s been committed for a crime - robbing a convenience store and shooting the person inside. The only thing is, he didn’t commit it. The system failed him because he’s poor, and public defenders don’t have enough time to help out properly. He had to plea guilty to save himself from having to potentially end up in adult prison. Though he didn’t commit the crime, the program worked wonders for him. He went from a bad road of drugs, sex, and fighting to one of sobriety and calmness. Yes, he still got mad at things, but he learned new ways to cope. He saw who he was before. He didn’t want to go back. He’s a good guy with a great heart, and you see time and time again how selfless he can be.

I really loved their relationship together. The forbidden aspect always makes things more challenging, but seeing the way they pushed each other to be the best person they could be was really great.

I also really liked the side characters. Henry was Elle’s rock, and he was always there to listen when she needed someone. Holiday and Axle were great siblings to Drix too. They love him fiercely, and they want what is best for him.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a great addition to my Katie McGarry collection, and I look forward to reading another one of her books soon!
