The Trial of Anna Thalberg
by Eduardo SangarcĂa
Looooove me a good witchy feminist story
I understand why this book has very polarizing reviews. It's written similarly to The Iliad, so it does not read as traditional prose. I'm not sure how it's formatted in print form, but on my ereader it was just paragraph after paragraph of verse that felt like overwhelming run on sentences. I am curious to pick up a physical copy to see if it is the same, or if it is formatted as a lineated poem (which would greatly improve my reading experience).
That being said, I decided to listen to the audiobook and that was fantastic!! The narrator's performance was so beautiful and poetic, and I was able to get into the story much more easily.
The story is frustrating and heartbreaking; it captures religious persecution and how women are oppressed/demonized in a manner that did not shy away from intensity.
Definitely a must read for historical/folk horror fans, and I will probably try to go back and physically read through the book at some point.
Tldr; 10/10 recommend listening to the audiobook
