The Year of the Gadfly
by Jennifer Miller
A teen, reeling from the suicide of her best friend, uprooted from her home, and bent on being the next Edward R. Murrow, delves into secret societies and covered-up history at her rigorous and well-respected prep school.
The author takes the disparate threads of teenagers past and present, as well as an adult who was once a teen at the prep school around which all of the action is centered, and ties all of their stories together into a comprehensive whole. While in some ways the story plays on stereotypical prep school/teen/coming-of-age stories, the author brings some fresh characterization and plot to the old tropes. I thought it was an excellent debut novel that addresses the self-righteousness and cruelty that often come with our teenage years...and how most of us outgrow that perspective.
