Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker

4.0

I have heard TED talks that say sleep is a superpower.

I have heard the advice "just sleep over it. You'll be fine."

But, never have I imagined that sleep could have such a powerful role to play in our daily functioning as human beings.

I salute Dr. Matthew Walker for devoting his life to researching the topic of sleep.

If not for his research and the tremendous effort gone into collating previous studies into this book, it would have been a great loss for all.

'Why we sleep' is not a textbook. But, I wish it is given such a place. It is rich with studies, data points, and simple logic that explains how sleep as a mechanism helps human beings function normally.

We know that missing a night's sleep ruins our next day. Although we are not pulling all-nighters, most of us are taking sleep for granted. And it has disastrous effects on our longevity and overall quality of life - both physical and mental.

This book does an extraordinary job of detailing how sleep works, what happens in our brain when we are sleeping, and why we should pay attention to our sleep cycle.

As a layman, the biggest takeaway from this book is: improving sleep alone can help us improve our overall health, mental well-being, and our longevity.
