The Big Four
by Agatha Christie
Truly, I am in love with the earnest friendship between Hastings and Poirot. When they reunited in the beginning surprising each other on their secret trips, I very dearly think I shed a tear.
But, boy, Hastings my lad, you really got the short end of the stick in this tiny novel. Christie had you call unconscious, what, three or five times? It was getting ridiculous how your trauma was acting as a fade to black.
As much as I want to find this book exciting, it really didn’t. There’s enough of Poirot/Hastings and some really exciting character moments sprinkled throughout for me to not totally disengage with this book, but as a whole it felt superfluous. The plot felt as if it was forcing the story to move on rather than the characters exploring the world.
Also, I haven’t read much up on the history of this book, but I’m not crazy with the similarities with The Sign of the Four, am I?
I’m glad it’s short. It slumps in the middle but picks up later on. It doesn’t really end in a satisfactory way and having Poirot acknowledge the leader of the Big Four as his nemesis felt forced.
