I loved how often Thackeray inserts himself into the novel, breaking the fourth wall, and making Jesus about reading letters over character’s shoulders. The narration is extremely fun. The downside of the novel was that given the sheer scale and scope of the novel, sometimes characters just disappear for 100 pages.
This includes one of my favourite lines I’ve ever read - about flattery, how it is said “fine words butter no parsnips”, yet flattery makes the “parsnips of society” tolerable. Lol
